Recently, there have been reports that the situation for foreign English teachers working in South Korea on E-2 visas is worsening. This is particularly true in popular areas like Gangnam and Hongdae. Teachers are experiencing stagnant wages and poor working conditions. This situation has become more pronounced as the issuance of E-2 visas has decreased.
Several factors contribute to this issue. For instance, the value of the South Korean won is weakening, and the restrictive visa conditions imposed by employers also play a role. Some academy directors still believe that many young foreigners will accept any conditions to stay in Korea, but it seems that such situations are becoming less common.
In light of this situation, what should foreign teachers consider when working in Korea? I would like to hear advice or opinions from those who have had similar experiences.
