How should we understand the various meanings of the word '변태'?

I am a foreigner who can use Korean to some extent. However, until recently, I only knew that the word '변태' was typically used in a sexual context. Recently, I heard this expression used in a different context. In that situation, it seemed to be used in a positive sense, like 'perfectionist' or 'creative person.' I am curious if the word '변태' can also be used in this positive sense. Is it similar to the English word 'freak,' which can have a negative connotation but can also be used positively, like in 'neat freak'?
